Teaching Philosophy
All students have different needs and require different teaching styles to obtain specific goals; I will continue to work until all of these goals are met. It is important that I understand my students needs and what type of learner they are in order to successfully educate them. As a teacher, I need to recognize that my students are not all going to learn topics and curriculum the same way and learn to present these ideas in ways that all types of learners will flourish.
I believe that one common ground for students is comfort. All students need to be feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment in order to grow. Once the environment is comfortable, students now require different teaching methods. My goal as an educator is to find ways to ensure that all of my students are not just understanding the content, but mastering the content in every lesson. I plan to research on my own to find new ways to present material to make sure it is connecting with various learning styles. My approach to teaching is ever changing because each lesson and topic may need to be articulated differently to ensure student success. I feel as an educator, every lesson needs to be looked at differently and with the mindset of your audience. When I am lesson planning, I am constantly going through how my students will respond to the lesson, if the expected response is negative, I come up with new ways to present the material that will gain more positive feedback. I have found that students learn best when they are actively engaged in kinesthetic learning. When teaching something like consonant clusters, I give my students large cards with a letter on them, the students need to arrange themselves in the correct order to form words with the proper consonant cluster included. Lessons such as this engage students, they have the opportunity to discuss the word with their groups and move around and get into their correct positions, all while learning.
In addition to making my students feel safe and comfortable, I like to provide a space that they feel welcome to express their culture within the classroom. Teaching in such a diverse community, it is important to take the students background into consideration when finding reading material to go along with lessons. It is essential to find readings that are relevant to the students I am teaching. Taking their previous experiences, language abilities and culture into consideration makes my classroom more inclusive and provides a curriculum set up for success.
I have taught in a highly diverse, in need school district for three years and I feel my greatest accomplishment is connecting and learning with the students. I express to my students that the classroom is not a place where there is one teacher and a group of students, but we are all teachers and even I can be a student. Ensuring my students are aware that I do not know everything, and they will never know everything, but showing them the passion they can have for problem solving and always trying to understand the task at hand is what is important to me as a teacher. My goal as a teacher is for my students to not think badly of themselves because they don’t learn the same way somebody else does, and to keep trying and use what works best for them.
